ECG, GRIDCo, and GWL resolve to address Voltage Challenges in Ashanti region

?The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and Ghana Water Limited (GWL) have resolved to provide immediate interventions to address the frequent low-voltage challenges affecting water production in the Ashanti Region.

The joint resolution comes after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) convened an emergency virtual meeting with the utility service providers last Wednesday following recent low-voltage supply to the Barekese Water Treatment Station, which disrupted water production and distribution to parts of Greater Kumasi.

GRIDCo pledged commitment to accelerate the Anwomaso–Ridge transmission upgrade, which will increase capacity from 360MVA to 1,000MVA to deliver more power to major load centres in Kumasi.

It also announced plans to upgrade the Nhyiaeso BSP transformer and develop a third Bulk Supply Point (BSP) for the Ashanti Region to ensure long-term stability.

The ECG, on its part, agreed to fast-track the upgrade of the Adoato–Barekese transmission line from 150mm² to 265mm² conductors to improve voltage quality to Barekese and surrounding communities, including GWL facilities mentioning the Nsuta–Kumawu project as a key intervention.

??GWL on their part assured the PURC that it would expedite the reconfiguration of transformers at its facilities to support improved voltage quality.

??Mr. Edward Boduah Kingston, Ashanti Regional Manager of PURC, said the Commission would immediately constitute an investigation team to assess the situation on the ground and monitor progress of the projects and that the outcome of the meetings would be escalated to the national level for support.

He also urged ECG and GRIDCo to improve official communication with GWL on project timelines and planned maintenance activities, enabling them to plan their production and distribution and to inform the public accordingly.

The measures are expected to improve electricity reliability and protect critical services, particularly water production and distribution in Greater Kumasi.

Maxwell Akosah-Kusi, Regional Distribution Manager, GWL Ashanti South; Dr. Hanson Akutteh, Chief Manager, Production, GWL Ashanti; Mrs. Yvonne Coleman, Chief Manager, Ashanti South, GWL; Ing. Christopher Anafo and his team; and officials of the PURC Ashanti Regional Office.
