Athletic Bilbao produced a stunning second-half performance to claim a convincing 3-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Spanish La Liga, with brothers Inaki and Nico Williams playing key roles in the emphatic triumph.
Inaki Williams started and featured for 66 minutes in the highly competitive encounter, while his younger brother Nico Williams lasted 76 minutes as Athletic Bilbao made light work of their opponent on home turf.
The first half ended in a pulsating goalless draw, with both sides struggling to find the breakthrough in the week 4 encounter held at the San Mames Stadium.
However, Athletic Bilbao returned from the break with greater intensity and immediately took control of proceedings. The breakthrough arrived just a minute after the restart when Spain international Nico Williams, who is of Ghanaian descent headed home the opening goal in the 46th minute.
Athletic doubled their advantage two minutes later after Inaki Williams assisted Robert Navarro to extend the lead for the host.
The quick-fire double left Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid shell-shocked, with the visitors struggling to recover from Athletic Bilbao’s explosive start to the second half.
Athletic Bilbao eventually put the result beyond doubt deep into stoppage time when Oihan Sancet found the back of the net to seal a comprehensive 3-0 victory.
The victory marked Athletic Bilbao’s second consecutive win after a difficult start to the new La Liga campaign. The Basque club had suffered back-to-back defeats against Sevilla and Barcelona in their opening two matches but have responded impressively to put their early-season struggles behind them.
