Girona sporting director Quique Carcel says Ghanaian defender Abdul Mumin’s pace, defensive qualities and versatility were key factors behind the club’s decision to sign him.
Mumin was presented by Girona on Monday after completing his move to the Spanish club, who are targeting an immediate return to La Liga following their relegation.
Cárcel revealed that Girona were specifically looking for a defender with the physical profile to add speed and balance to their back line.
“We were looking for a fast defensive player profile, and we think he can help us a lot,” Cárcel said during Mumin’s presentation.
The sporting director admitted that securing the Ghanaian was not straightforward, with Mumin attracting interest from other clubs before ultimately choosing Girona.
“Logically, it wasn't easy to bring him here because he could have had other offers, but in the end, he chose Girona, and we are very happy.”
Cárcel believes Mumin can provide an important balance to the Girona defence as the club attempts to secure promotion.
“He can provide that balance that the team will surely need,” he added.
Mumin arrives with experience of Spanish football after his time with Rayo Vallecano, where he played in La Liga.
Girona president Delfà Geli also praised the defender’s experience, saying the club believes he can help them become “consistent and competitive” in the Segunda División.
Mumin has already declared himself ready for the challenge, insisting he is physically and mentally prepared to play after being involved in Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
