The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed experienced Swedish coach Pierre Persson as assistant coach of the Black Queens ahead of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Persson joins head coach Kim Lars Björkegren's technical team as Ghana intensifies preparations for the continental tournament, bringing more than a decade of experience in women's football.
Currently with Finnish club Aland United, Persson has held several senior positions since 2010, including head coach, sporting director, club director and general manager in Sweden's top women's leagues.
The appointment came after Björkegren invited his compatriot to join the Black Queens' technical team, with Persson embracing the opportunity to contribute to Ghana's WAFCON campaign.
His primary responsibility will be to improve the team's passing, possession play and tactical organisation while complementing the work of the head coach and fellow assistant coach Anita.
Since arriving at the team's training base in Casablanca, Persson has introduced high-intensity training sessions designed to improve the speed of ball circulation, movement off the ball and decision-making in possession. While bringing fresh ideas to the squad, he has also sought to build on the team's existing culture.
The Swedish coach has been impressed by the quality and mentality of the players, noting that many compete at top clubs across Europe and have created a competitive environment within the squad. His approach focuses on helping the players grow in confidence while refining their tactical understanding and technical execution.
Persson's arrival further strengthens the Black Queens' technical team as Ghana continues preparations for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco from July 25 to August 16.
