Black Starlets head coach Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum has drawn a clear distinction between coaching a club side and managing a national team, stressing that the two roles demand entirely different approaches.
Speaking on the Ghana Football Association podcast, the 2022 Ghana Premier League-winning coach explained that the joy of leading Ghana back to the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations after eight years comes with unique challenges.
"The dynamics of club team coaching are very different from national team coaching," Ogum said.
Unlike club football, where coaches have daily contact with players and extended periods to drill tactics and build chemistry, national team coaches operate under tight windows and must quickly mould players from various backgrounds into a cohesive unit.
Ogum, who also serves as the GFA's Head of Coach Education, has successfully navigated both worlds. He won the Premier League title with Asante Kotoko in 2022 and is now preparing his young Black Starlets for a tough Group D campaign in Morocco, which includes Algeria, Senegal, and South Africa.
For Ogum, the principles of merit and preparation remain constant. But the context, he says, could not be more different.
