Ghanaian-born former German international Gerald Asamoah has shared his excitement after receiving the Federal Cross of Merit honour from the Federal President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
The honour is in recognition of his remarkable humanitarian work and his contribution to strengthening ties between Germany and Ghana.
Asamoah was decorated with the Federal Cross of Merit on Monday, November 3, in Accra, on the sidelines of the German leader’s official visit to the country.
Asamoah, 47, is accompanying Steinmeier on the Africa tour as a special guest.
Bestowing the honour on the former Germany player, Frank-Walter Steinmeier described Asamoah as a “bridge builder between Ghana and Germany” and commended him for his selfless service through his “Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Disease,” which he established in 2007.
Filled with emotion, a delighted Gerald Asamoah said, "I am proud to receive such an honour."
He added, “That I’m receiving something like this, I still can’t believe it. But it’s pure joy. It’s simply pride that the work I do is paying off. When God blesses someone, you have to try to give something back.”
Through his Gerald Asamoah Foundation, the former Germany international has supported and saved many children suffering from various heart diseases.
