Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has backed growing calls for the deliberate inclusion of home-based players in Ghana’s 2026 World Cup squad.
His stance supports suggestions from football administrators and legislators urging the Ghana Football Association to reserve places for local players at the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The push follows FIFA’s announcement of over $300 million package for clubs whose players participate in the World Cup, a policy expected to financially benefit domestic teams.
Kwakye Ofosu believes the initiative represents an opportunity to reward top performers in the Ghana Premier League while boosting local club finances.
“I agree. There’s a precedent. At the last World Cup, there were local players. Local players and local teams benefited, so I see no reason why we cannot repeat the same,” he told Joy Sports.
He added that the enlarged 26-man squad offers enough space to accommodate deserving local talent without compromising the team’s overall quality.
“It’s a 26-man squad; not everybody gets to play. There are some who will never touch a football anyway. So why don’t we utilize the opportunity to select the best-performing local players?
"At the same time, our local clubs will also benefit from this package, so I think it’s a win-win for everyone. I support it fully."
