Patrick Vieira has been dismissed as Genoa head coach after a disastrous Serie A campaign that left the club rooted to the bottom of the table.
The Senegal-born coach took charge of the Italian side in November 2024, but his tenure ended abruptly after a run of poor results.
Genoa have failed to win a single league match this season, collecting just three points from nine games.
A brief club statement confirmed Vieira’s departure, stating that he “was no longer the coach of the first team,” while thanking him and his staff for their professionalism and commitment.
Sources close to the 49-year-old revealed that Vieira initiated the talks leading to the mutual termination of his contract.
Vieira had been appointed to steer Genoa clear of relegation last season, and he initially delivered, securing eight wins and nine draws from 26 matches to guide them to 13th place.
However, this campaign’s collapse, which included six losses and just two Coppa Italia victories, sealed his fate.
Under growing pressure from supporters and the club’s hierarchy, Genoa decided a change was necessary after five defeats in their past six league matches.
A World Cup and European Championship winner with France, Vieira enjoyed an illustrious playing career at Arsenal, Inter Milan, and Manchester City before moving into management.
He began his coaching career at New York City FC in 2016, later managing Nice, Crystal Palace, and Strasbourg.
Despite flashes of promise in each job, sustained success has eluded him at the top level.
Genoa are expected to announce a replacement before their next Serie A fixture, as the club fights to avoid a return to the second tier.
Vieira departs Italy facing renewed questions about his managerial future after another short-lived spell in Europe’s top leagues.
