Former Black Stars management committee member Ernest Thompson says Ghana have what it takes to compete with the world’s elite teams, such as England and Brazil, at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on Sporty FM, the former Hearts of Oak board secretary shared his thoughts on the national team’s prospects ahead of their fifth appearance at the global tournament. Ghana qualified for the 2026 edition in October after an impressive qualifying campaign, rekindling hopes of another memorable run on the world stage.
Thompson, however, admitted that while Ghana can hold their own against some of the world’s top sides, there are others he would prefer the team avoid in the group stage.
"I wouldn't like us to play Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and most probably France," he said. "England, I don't mind. When we meet England, it's a different ballgame; it’s like a colonial master and his subject who wants to fight. We learned football from them, and I think we can rise up."
He added that Ghana could also go toe-to-toe with Brazil, provided the team gets its tactical approach right. Reflecting on Ghana’s 3-0 defeat to the South Americans in the Round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup, Thompson explained that the result was not a true reflection of the country’s potential.
"Brazil play just like us, with individual flair and creativity. But we didn’t play the right tactics. We defended too high and left spaces at the back. Ronaldo saw it and took advantage. It all depends on getting the tactics right,” he said.
Thompson believes that with proper preparation and discipline, Ghana can challenge any team at the 2026 World Cup and restore their reputation as one of Africa’s best footballing nations.
