Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has praised captain Portia Boakye for her leadership, consistency, and enduring influence on Ghana’s national women’s team.
Boakye, one of the most experienced players in the current Black Queens squad, remains central to the team’s revival under the Swedish coach.
Her leadership was vital as Ghana clinched bronze at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and recently sealed qualification for the next edition with a 7â0 aggregate win over Egypt.
Björkegren commended the veteran forward for her professionalism, describing her as an exemplary leader both on and off the pitch.
“She [Portia Boakye] has been great. She’s doing a great job, especially off the pitch where people don’t see. On the pitch, she’s fantastic,” the coach told 3Sports.
The Swede also highlighted Boakye’s exceptional fitness and adaptability despite her long years of service to the national team.
“She’s getting a little bit older but honestly, I can’t see it when she’s playing. She’s still fast, quick, mobile and just great,” he added.
With the Black Queens targeting a return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since 2007, Boakye’s experience and leadership continue to serve as a driving force in Ghana’s renewed ambition on the continental and global stages.
