Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has spoken glowingly about young defender Josh Acheampong, describing him as a player he has admired “since day one” and expressing hope that the teenager “feels trusted” within the senior setup.
The coach’s remarks come as Acheampong continues to earn valuable minutes amid Chelsea’s recent injury challenges.
Acheampong, who was born in England and has Ghanaian heritage, has impressed with his composure, discipline, and maturity beyond his years.
A product of Chelsea’s famed Cobham academy, the 18-year-old has taken advantage of opportunities in defence during a demanding period for the squad.
Maresca, speaking to the club’s official website, highlighted the youngster’s professionalism and progress since joining first-team training.
“We are happy with the way he’s improving and the way he is working every day,” he said. “If you look back, in pre-season in the USA, he played 45 minutes of the first game. So since day one I really liked Josh.”
The Italian tactician also underlined his commitment to nurturing young players, stressing that Acheampong is viewed as an integral part of Chelsea’s long-term project.
“I hope he feels trusted and part of the group, more than what we are showing to him,” Maresca added.
Acheampong’s recent performances have drawn praise from supporters, many of whom believe he deserves more starting opportunities in the Premier League.
Maresca, however, is keen to manage expectations carefully, ensuring the young defender’s development continues in a structured way.
“It’s difficult to play in the Champions League and to play from the start in the Premier League, so we show him trust and confidence,” the Chelsea boss noted.
With his growing maturity and consistent displays, Acheampong’s rise represents the continued success of Chelsea’s academy.
