The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has announced the mutual termination of its contract with national team head coach Avram Grant, bringing an end to the Israeli tactician’s two-year spell in charge of the Chipolopolo.
In a statement released on Tuesday, FAZ General Secretary Machacha Shepande confirmed that both parties had reached an amicable agreement to part ways, describing the decision as a necessary step “to help chart a new way forward for the Chipolopolo.”
Grant, who was appointed on December 22, 2022, led Zambia to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifications - first for the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast and then for the upcoming 2025 tournament in Morocco.
His tenure marked a return to continental consistency for the 2012 African champions after years of missing out on AFCON participation.
Despite achieving qualification milestones, there had been growing debate within Zambian football circles regarding the team’s overall progress under Grant, particularly following inconsistent performances in international friendlies and the early exit from the 2023 AFCON.
Also, the dismal showing of the Chipolopolo in the 2026 World Cup qualifications and the CHAN tournament contributed to the decision to part ways with the former Chelsea boss.
Zambia are drawn in a challenging Group A for the Morocco 2025 AFCON, alongside hosts Morocco, Mali, and Comoros.
FAZ says further details on the coaching setup and future plans for the national team will be communicated in due course.
