Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has cautioned against dismissing Ghana coach Otto Addo, describing the calls for his removal as “unfortunate” and a “tragic mistake.”
Otto Addo led the Black Stars to seven wins in the eight World Cup qualifiers he took charge of, guiding Ghana to back-to-back appearances at football’s biggest stage.
The 50-year-old is the first Ghanaian to achieve the feat, having also qualified the team for the 2022 edition in Qatar.
Despite this success, doubts persist over his ability to manage the side at the highest level after failing to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
“I believe these calls are a little bit unfortunate and misplaced,” Kwakye Ofosu said on the floor of Parliament.
“The man who guided us to this qualification in stellar fashion is best placed to prepare the team for the competition itself.”
He added, “It will be a tragic mistake to dismiss the coach and hire a new person who will have very little time to prepare the team.”
Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku has already confirmed Addo will remain in charge through the World Cup, which will take place in the USA, Canada, and Mexico next June.
The tournament draw will be held on December 5 in Washington.
