Ernest Poku could not hide his delight after scoring his first Bundesliga goal for Bayer Leverkusen in their 2-1 away victory over FC St. Pauli.
The Dutch-Ghanaian winger came off the bench and found the net just two minutes later, sealing the win in style.
"It was my second touch of the ball. I'm happy about the goal and that I was able to help my team. That's what the coach wants from me, and I'm trying to do it," Poku said with a smile after the match, speaking to Bild.
The 21-year-old, who joined from AZ Alkmaar for â¬10 million in the summer, has already shown he can be decisive. In the 1-1 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach, he assisted Malik Tillman’s opener, and in the cup tie against GroÃaspach, he provided another crucial pass.
Coach Kasper Hjulmand praised him warmly: "We need a bit more depth and deep runs. Poku has done very, very well. He's also training very well; we'll see what happens in the next game."
Poku remains humble about his chances: "I simply want to give my best. If I have to do it from the bench, then I'll do it with everything I have. And if I can do it as a starter, then I'll do the same."
