Director of Public Affairs at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Abdul-Hayi Moomen, has revealed that the players who powered the school to an historic international football title now believe they deserve a chance in Ghana’s national teams.
Speaking on Channel One TV, Moomen said the squad’s remarkable feat in China has fuelled hopes among the players that their exploits will be recognised by selectors from the Under-17 level through to the Black Stars.
“It’s massive. Some of them (the UDS players) are even beginning to feel that it’s about time the handlers of our various national teams whether from the Under 17 to the Black Stars to pay attention to them as well and to give them the opportunity to prove their worth to the country,” Moomen stated.
UDS stunned Paulista University of Brazil 2-1 in extra time to clinch the World University Games Football competition â a result that drew congratulations from Sports Minister Kofi Adams and the Ghana Football Association.
The team, which made history as Africa’s first university side to lift a global football title, is scheduled to return home on Sunday, October 4, to a hero’s welcome.
