Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has congratulated Ghana’s University for Development Studies (UDS) for reaching the final of the FISU World University Football Tournament in Dalian, China.
Her message came shortly after UDS secured a dramatic 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Spain’s University of Granada on Friday to book their place in Sunday’s showpiece against defending champions Paulista University of Brazil.
UDS, representing Ghana and Africa, became the first Ghanaian university side to qualify for the final of a global football competition.
After 90 minutes of tense, goalless football, the Tamale-based institution held their nerve in the shoot-out, converting five of six spot kicks while goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo produced two stunning saves to secure a historic victory.
“Congratulations to UDS,” the Vice President posted on social media. “Your resilience, teamwork, and fighting spirit have brought pride to Ghana and Africa. One last step to glory! You have made us proud. Now, go make history.”
UDS’s achievement marks the first time since 2009 that a Ghanaian team has reached the final of a world football event.
All eyes now turn to September 28, when the team will attempt to complete their extraordinary journey by lifting the title in China.
