Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, find themselves at the center of a growing controversy as their second-leg qualifier against Egypt in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier hangs in the balance.
This is due to unresolved bonus payments, which led to the team boycotting training since Saturday, demanding the payment of outstanding bonuses amounting to $9,500.
Sources within the Ministry confirmed to GNA Sports that the Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams met with the players on Sunday, urging them to honour the fixture and saying that their bonuses would be paid in due course.
The sources added that all per diems were settled and that the delay of the winning bonuses was due to issues relating to the actual amount to be paid as bonuses for each player.
This leaves the second-leg encounter scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, at the Accra Sports Stadium in limbo, as the standoff between the Black Queens and the Sports stands unresolved.
Officials of the Ghana Football Association and the Professional Football Association of Ghana have stepped in to try to resolve the issues, which are currently at a stalemate.
This current impasse, if not resolved, could damage the hopes of the Black Queens in their journey to the 2026 WAFCON set to be held in Morocco.
