Two persons believed to be members of a gang of robbers have been gunned down by the police at Mankraso in the Ashanti Region.
A police statement issued on Wednesday said the bodies of the suspects; Osman Majid Abdul Sadik, also known as Cross, 25, and Abdulai Sadik, 20, have been deposited at the Bekwai Municipal Hospital Morgue for preservation.
The suspects are alleged to have engaged the police in a shootout.
As a result of the shootout the suspects sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital for treatment but were pronounced dead on arrival.
It said the Ashanti Regional Police Command gathered intelligence on Abdul Sadik (Cross), a suspect wanted in connection with several robberies and killings in Mankraso and its environs.
The police identified three hideouts at Offinso where Sadik and his gang were believed to be hiding.
The intelligence-led operation, spearheaded by three officers and other ranks, raided the said locations.
At Offinso Ayankaso, Sadik fired gunshots from his room and attempted to escape through the ceiling.
The police tactically returned fire, and two suspects sustained gunshot wounds, the statement said.
“A pump action gun with six rounds of ammunition, one Blacksmith and Wesson pistol, 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition, an unmarked pistol and two spent cartridges were retrieved,” it said.
The police said further research conducted in the room revealed three smart mobile phones, two keypad phones, mobile phone accessories, and one Macbook.
Other items found were a machete, a sock and an ash singlet with talisman, black body armour, two long boots, picture frame of his gang, a Ghana Card bearing the picture of Sadik and the name of Osman Majid, and cash of GH¢2,680.
Police say during interrogation the suspects gave their names as Abdul Sadik and Abdulai Saik.
It said Abdul Sadik admitted carrying out several robberies in the Mankraso area and confessed to killing three people.
Abdul Sadik also implicated accomplices whose names were given as Kingkong, Roy, Fii, Raph, Koboo, Ali and Ike.
Abdul Sadik told the police that some of the guns were with Kingkong, Koboo and Ali at Mining sites at Manso.
“Efforts are underway to apprehend their accomplices and retrieve the other guns,” it said.
