Team Ghana, represented by Shenmo Ghana swept the top awards at the prestigious second African Shenmo Cup, International Abacus Mental Olympiad.
The Olympiad was held at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village in Rwanda, over the weekend, on the theme “Empowering young minds, realizing Africa’s dream”.
Representing Ghana, Ridwan Mahmoud Jajah and Ummu Sulaim Abass of Al-Hikmah Islamic Montessori School secured first and third place respectively in the Level 1 category, earning two gold medals and two trophies for the nation.
The competition brought together over 300 participants from 30 African countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Libya, Mali, and Cameroon.
Ms Claudette Irere, Minister of State in Rwanda’s Ministry of Education, described hosting the Olympiad as a milestone, stating, “It is impressive how Abacus builds the confidence, focus, critical thinking, visualisation and mental agility of these young minds.”
Mr Nelson Mbarushimana, Director General of the Rwanda Education Board, said the event was organised under the Ministry’s guidance and in partnership with local education stakeholders.
He noted that Rwanda had integrated Shenmo Abacus Mental Math into its education system, benefiting millions of children.
Mr Li Mianjun, Founder and President of Shenmo International Education Group, said, “Abacus has stood the test of time because of its unique ability to transition learners from tangible to mental arithmetic.”
Mr Musa Frimpong, Principal of Shenmo Ghana, said the team’s improved performance compared to the previous edition in Nigeria reflected Ghana’s commitment to mathematics and STEM education.
“Our vision and goal is to ensure this reaches millions of young Ghanaians in the years ahead by establishing Shenmo Abacus clubs and learning centres in schools, communities and organisations across Ghana,” he said.
Mr. Frimpong called on government and development partners to support the initiative, adding, “This will enhance the personal, academic and social development of learners while contributing to national development in this STEM-driven global economy we are experiencing now and in the future.”
He congratulated the team, saying they had “calculated a path to glory and made the entire nation proud.”
The event was attended by dignitaries including representatives from the Rwandan Defence and Police Force, African Ambassadors, local government officials, Dr Lily Cheng of San Diego State University, Mr Joseph Gyebi, Abacus Instructor from Ghana, and over 30 Shenmo Principals from China, the USA, and Africa, alongside more than 1,000 students, parents, and guests.
