Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has announced that the Ministry is working with the Ministry of Finance to get financial clearance to recruit in the education space.
“In our space alone, we require 93,000 recruitments to fill in vacancies both for institutions of higher learning, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, the Ghana Education Service and the TVET service,” he said.
The Minister made the announcement at the 22nd Biennial Congress of the University Teachers Association of Ghana in Aburi in the Eastern Region.
The Congress was on the theme: “Rethinking Higher Education Pedagogy and Funding in the Age of AI: Ethics, Equity and Development Impact”.
He said the government was committing GH¢610 million to honour the book and research allowance, assuring teachers of the universities that the warrant had been issued.
“We are honouring a legitimate condition of service of university teachers, which is a payment of book and research allowance. The money will hit your account shortly,” he assured.
He commended the Association for identifying and certifying higher education in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), adding that AI was no longer a futuristic idea but a present reality.
“AI will change the way we learn, the way we teach, and the way we practise. Mainstreaming it as part of your pedagogical changes is significant.
“What is important is guaranteeing ethical integrity even as we operate in the age of AI,” he said.
The Minister said AI, if not checked, could produce lazy and dishonest students except where their diligence was high and they adhered to ethical considerations.
“As you train persons for critical thinking and problem solving, we also should invest in improving digital literacy and AI-driven pedagogical training,” he said.
Professor Mamudu A. Akudugu, the outgoing National President of UTAG, said the Association had made strides in negotiating better financial and non-financial conditions of service for academic staff in the universities.
He stressed that the Association had been in the forefront of defending university autonomy and collegial governance against external interferences.
“UTAG has provided over GH¢706,000 in scholarships to support 164 flood-affected students, showcasing the Association’s commitment to social responsibility beyond its membership,” he said.
The Professor said the Association had established a working committee to plan and develop the long-term UTAG Guest House in Accra to create a sustainable welfare and revenue-generating facility.
