The Ningo-Prampram Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with its partners, has sensitised apprentices from various fields in Prampram on rule- of-law and corruption.?
The sensitisation programme was organised in collaboration with the GIZ German Corporation and the Ministry of Finance, with co-funding from the European Union.
Mr. Oppong Mensah, the NCCE Ningo-Prampram Municipal Director, educating the apprentices, said it was important for the public to be engaged on the rule of law and corruption due to its importance in national development.
Mr. Mensah said that the rule of law was a principle that ensures that all individuals, institutions and government officials are treated the same under the law.
He added that every citizen must be subjected and accountable to the laws of the country irrespective of their social or political status.
He encouraged the public to show interest in governance and speak against any act of corruption, as well as report such acts to the appropriate institution for redress.
Touching on the duties of the NCCE, Mr. Mensah noted that their mandate includes educating the public on the tenets of the 1992 constitution and other national issues.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emelia Adzoa Vorsah, a senior officer at the Ningo-Prampram District Police, educating the apprentices on the duties of the Ghana Police Service, encouraged the public to help the service with information on criminals and their activities in their communities to ensure peace.
ASP Vorsah added that issues such as corruption, misappropriation of government funds, bribery, and extortion of money, among others, should be reported to the police for investigation to be carried out.
She urged individuals not to be scared or intimidated to visit the nearest police station to report criminal activities, stressing that the Ghana Police Service was friendly and also needs such information to ensure the safety of the people. ?
She said people who volunteer information on criminal activities would be protected under the whistleblowing act; therefore, they should not be afraid to report misconduct.
Speaking on the rule-of-law, she mentioned that no individual is above the law, and the law will deal with anyone who engages in corruption equally, irrespective of their position or social status.
She further said that even though people assume that corruption is only related to government bodies, some petty behaviours at home, in the workplace, in social groups, and others, also depicted corruption.
ASP Vorsah, therefore, admonished the public to start working on themselves and speak against many acts to help them free themselves from corruptible activities.
