The Kevin Okyere Foundation (KOF) a non-governmental organization focused on supporting the underprivileged in society has donated food items to 400 families and individuals in the Fadama-Abeka communities in Accra.
The event, planned to coincide with this year’s World Food Day celebrations on Thursday October 16, attracted a large number of residents who were selected by religious, traditional and local assembly leaders who identified the needy within the communities and handed them coupons two days before the event. The Nurudeen Children’s Home also received food items.
Food items such as rice, sugar, beans, sardines, salt, tomato paste, gari, cocoa beverage, powdered milk, vegetable cooking oil together with sanitary items like bathing and washing soaps, toothpaste and sanitary pads were handed to the beneficiaries.
The Founder and Chairman of the Foundation, Mr Kevin Okyere in a brief remarks before the packages were handed out, said it was the duty of society to carry everyone along the path of development, particularly when it is obvious that resource inequalities and people’s vulnerabilities made it impossible for them to keep pace.
‘As a Foundation, we see every day that many families still struggle with access to education, healthcare, and opportunity. That is why we set for ourselves four key areas of focus — education, healthcare, economic empowerment, and humanitarian relief’.
He said the Foundation has quietly supported lives across Ghana for years without much publicity. We’ve always believed that kindness doesn’t need an audience, but as we grow, we’ve come to realize that sharing our story can inspire others to act too. And that’s what today represents, he added.
Mr Okyere said in education for example, the Foundation has provided scholarships and materials to allow children to dream again whilst in healthcare it has funded dozens of life-saving surgeries, particularly for children born with heart defects whose families could not afford treatment at the National Cardiothoracic Centre at Korle-Bu amongst other interventions.
In the area of healthcare, he said ‘We have also supported hospitals across the country with essential medical equipment and infrastructure to strengthen care. These are not just numbers to us, they are stories of hope renewed and lives restored’
Explaining why Fadama and its neighboring communities were selected, he said his team settled on the area because of a favour received from the National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharabutu sometime last year.
‘I also learned that his home feeds hundreds of people every single day, regardless of background or faith. That quiet generosity moved me deeply. So when the time came to begin our Food Donation Programme, there was no better place to start than right here, in his community, as a gesture of gratitude and respect’
Mr Okyere said his Foundation remains committed to working with state institutions, the private sector, and civil society to tackle the roots of poverty and inequality — not just their symptoms. He also hinted at training the youth of the area to acquire employable skills in future to make them more productive in the country and abroad.
“In our shared humanity, we are only as strong as the compassion we show one another. This year’s theme “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future” offers us a good reason to go beyond the celebrations and make it a commitment to keep working hand in hand for a better future for all”.
Speaking through a translator, the Chief Imam praised Mr Okyere and the Foundation for the gesture and promised to continue to pray for the team to be able to reach out to more Ghanaians as his core business grows.
Mohammed Mahfuz Bashir and Rashid Alhassan, Assembly Members for Fadama and Abeka respectively took turns to thank Mr Okyere and the Foundation on behalf of the residents.
