A total of 14 special cases were detected and referred for further medical attention during two free breast cancer screening and health education exercises organized by Asa Savings and Loans Limited in the Ahafo and Bono Regions as part of efforts to promote early detection and community health.
The screenings, held in Goaso and Sunyani, formed part of the institution’s annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in support of Pink October, the global breast cancer awareness campaign aimed at encouraging early detection and saving lives.
Nine special cases detected in Goaso
In Goaso, nine special cases were identified and referred for further checks after 167 people, including 11 men, were screened at the Goaso Main Market.
The exercise was organized in collaboration with the Goaso Government Hospital and led by Josephine Osei Benewaa, Health Promotion Officer, and Midwife Deborah Ali Akiwele, supported by six medical staff. It featured education, screening, and counseling sessions, with health professionals emphasizing that breast cancer can affect both women and men and that early detection saves lives.
“Breast health awareness is critical. Diagnosing cancer at its early stages makes treatment easier and improves health outcomes,” Ms. Benewaa stated.
Emmanuel Ntim, Goaso Area Manager of Asa Savings and Loans, explained that the exercise reflects the company’s commitment to promoting community well-being alongside financial services. “As a financial institution, we also have to demonstrate a commitment to social well-being beyond our financial services. This can lead to increased goodwill and a stronger reputation. We also aim at promoting early detection to help reduce the long-term financial burden on individuals and families associated with treating advanced-stage breast cancer,” he said.
Isaac Owiredu Akosah, Branch Manager of the Goaso Business Center, added that Asa has been organizing similar breast screening and health education programmes nationwide over the years, underscoring its commitment to community health.
Five special cases detected in Sunyani
At the Sunyani Main Lorry Station in the Bono Region, five special cases were detected out of 147 people screened, including 12 men. Those with special cases were referred to the Sunyani Teaching Hospital for further medical checks.
The screening was held in partnership with the Kwatire Polyclinic, headed by Daniel Gunguni, with support from the Head of Midwifery, Joyce Bannerman, and other healthcare professionals. Participants were engaged in confidential conversations before and after screening to deepen their understanding of breast health.
“Offering non-judgmental support to survivors to help them navigate emotional and social challenges is also important,” Ms. Bannerman noted, stressing that early detection improves treatment outcomes and helps break down stigma associated with breast cancer.
Emmanuel Opare Yeboah, Sunyani Area Manager of Asa Savings and Loans, said the initiative is part of the company’s broader commitment to community health.
“Organizing screening in this month of October is part of our commitment to the health and well-being of our customers and the broader community. We also want our customers and the general public to recognize our institution as caring and community-oriented,” he said.
Promoting early detection nationwide
Through these screenings in Goaso and Sunyani, Asa Savings and Loans Limited has demonstrated its commitment to supporting national efforts in the fight against breast cancer. The institution believes that investing in preventive health care not only saves lives but also reduces the long-term financial and emotional burden on individuals, families, and communities.
