…to address sanitation challenges
By Samuel Sam
HOPin Academy has handed over modern toilet facilities to the Kumbungu Health Centre, market traders, and the Kumbungu Senior High School in the Northern Region, In a bid to curb open defecation and improve sanitation.
The initiative, funded by the Grundfos Foundation, comprises hygienic toilet units equipped with handwashing stations, polytanks, and safe water points. The project seeks to address critical sanitation challenges, thereby improving health outcomes for patients, healthcare workers, pregnant and breastfeeding women, students, and the broader Kumbungu community.
District Environmental Officer for the Kumbungu Assembly, Peter Adda, commended HOPin Academy and the Grundfos Foundation for their contributions towards addressing sanitation challenges in the district’s health and educational institutions.
He appealed for similar support to be extended to other schools to ensure pupils have decent and hygienic toilet facilities. Mr Adda also urged landlords to construct toilets for their tenants to help eliminate open defecation.
Assistant Headmaster of Kumbungu Senior High School, Simon Agongo, expressed appreciation for the facility, stressing that it was meant for students, traders, and health workers, not for public or household use. He encouraged residents to maintain cleanliness around the facilities and adopt good hygiene practices.
Madam Moro Jutta, Head of the Kumbungu Sub-district Health Centre, described the project as timely, noting that it would relieve patients of the stress previously caused by the lack of sanitation facilities. “We are very grateful for this project, and we will take good care of it to ensure its sustainability,” she said.
Global Business Acceleration Lead at Grundfos Foundation, Leon Roland Elongue Akame, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to supporting sustainable development initiatives in underserved communities. “We are happy to partner with HOPin Academy in addressing sanitation challenges within communities and schools for national development,” he said.
Founder and Executive Director of HOPin Academy, MacCarthy Mac-Gbathy, said the organisation remains committed to empowering communities through skills development, education, health, and sustainability-focused initiatives.
“Our work stems from a deep belief that access to basic sanitation is not just a necessity but a fundamental human right that underpins health, dignity, and progress,” he stated.
He added that with support from the Grundfos Foundation and local partners such as “Fix That Pump”, the organisation had worked tirelessly to execute projects under its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programme aimed at building healthier communities.
“Poor sanitation contributes to preventable diseases and disrupts education, especially for girls and mothers. By providing these facilities, we are addressing immediate health concerns while investing in the future of our youth, mothers, children, and healthcare system,” Mr. Mac-Gbathy emphasised.
