The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has assured that his administration will get tough on the kidnapping phenomenon that is gradually gaining root in the country.
Speaking to members of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) at the Jubilee House on Monday, the President said he will do everything within his power to ensure that the recent spate of kidnappings in the country is halted.
“We are all concerned about this phenomenon of kidnappings which we have not known. Our brothers and sisters in Nigeria have known it. But we have not known it in this country and we need to do something about it to make sure that it doesn’t become a feature of our society
“I am very, very determined on the issue and decisions are being taken as we seek what will be a clear manifestation of the determination I have to deal with this matter,” the president stated.
The President’s comments come after several reported cases of kidnapping in the country in the last few months.
The Police in the last few days have rescued the head of Mission of Estonia in Ghana and an Indian businessman who were kidnapped in Accra and Kumasi respectively.
Three teenage girls who were kidnapped in Takoradi in the Western region in 2018 have still not been found despite the ringleader of the group that kidnapped the girls being arrested and put behind bars.
Statistics have also revealed that there were 64 kidnapping cases in 2018, 23 of which were true kidnapping cases and 28 of which were abductions.
This figure is expected to shoot up in 2019, with over 60 reported cases so far.
Most suspects arrested for various kidnapping cases in the country have been Nigerians which has heightened apprehension towards nationals from the fellow West African state.
