Taxi driver smashes armed robber, gets accomplice arrested

Two armed robbers who succeeded in robbing a taxi driver of an amount of GH¢350 and other belongings enjoyed the feeling of their illegal booty for the briefest of time as the aggrieved taxi driver smashed his taxi into one of the escaping robbers and got the other apprehended.

The suspects – Johnny Agbleke, 25, alias Danjuma, who is on admission at the Police Hospital; and Ebenezer K. Appiah, 22, in police custody – chartered the taxi on Sunday, November 4, at about 5am from La Paz to Newtown.

ACP Timothy Yoosa Bonga, the Nima Divisional commander who briefed The Finder yesterday, said at Newtown, Jonny and Ebenezer asked the driver to take them to Nima.

The driver obliged and branched onto the Panaman road around Kokomlemle.

The suspects later asked the driver to stop in front of a shop. Ebenezer, who was seated at the back seat, got out and came to stand on the left side of the taxi driver while his accomplice, Johnny, seated in front, pointed a knife at the driver.

ACP Bonga said the suspects asked the driver to surrender his phone and any money on him to them; the driver obliged for dear life’s sake.

The suspects, Johnny and Ebenezer, quickly took to their heels but their relief was short-lived. The taxi driver (name withheld) restarted his car and gave the robbers a hot chase. He run into Johnny at about 70 metres away and raised an alarm, which led to the arrest of Ebenezer.

According to ACP Bonga, a police patrol team rescued the suspects from the mob and took them to the Nima Police Station where they were sent to the Police Hospital for treatment.

ACP Bonga expressed appreciation to the public for their support.
