President Nana Akufo-Addo has issued a stern warning to individuals inciting post-election violence, stating he will not compromise the nation’s peace to serve the interests of a select few.
The President condemned attacks on public institutions and individuals following the December 7 election and reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the country’s stability ahead of his tenure's end on 7th January 2025.
In a national address on 24th December, ahead of the Christmas celebrations, he congratulated President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his victory. However, Akufo-Addo emphasised the importance of prioritising national interest and democracy over political ambition, urging security forces to maintain law and order.
He stated:
Let us never forget that seeking power is not a call to arms, but rather a call to service. Those who might contemplate using violence to achieve their aims know this; our nation's peace is sacred and it will not be sacrificed on the altar of ambition. The rule of law will prevail no matter what.
He also urged security agencies to adopt a firm stance against threats to stability and harmony.
Let us ensure that every election deepens our democracy and fortifies our unity. As the saying goes, peace is not the absence of conflict, but the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means. Let us embrace this wisdom as a guiding principle in our journey forward.
Delivering his final Christmas address as President, Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their support and highlighted his administration’s achievements.
We've expanded access to education, strengthened the healthcare system, invested in infrastructure, revitalised agriculture, accelerated the industrial transformation of the economy, and worked tirelessly to secure a brighter future for our children.
He concluded with confidence in Ghana’s bright future, calling for national unity to propel the country towards greatness.
