Parliament will officially commence the registration of elected MPs for the incoming 9th Parliament today, Wednesday, 25th December 2024. This process is pivotal in preparation for the swearing-in of members and the election of a Speaker of Parliament on 6th January 2025.
According to a statement dated 24th December, Deputy Clerk to Parliament, Camillo Pwamang indicated that the registration process would start with an online registration.
The statement further noted:
Targeted messages inviting members will be sent to members-elect via WhatsApp or emails. Physical registration will start on Thursday, 2nd January 2025, and end on 6th January 2025. Members who may need further clarifications or assistance may contact the officers in charge of the registration exercise on telephone numbers 055 022 2200 or 050 363 4466.
Pwamang also disclosed the programme outline for the dissolution of the 8th Parliament and the inauguration of the 9th Parliament on 6th January:
Election of Speaker and Swearing-in of Speaker-elect and Members-elect
Election of Speaker: Monday, 6th January 2025, at 11 p.m.
Members to be seated: 9 p.m.
Swearing-in of Speaker-elect and Members-elect: 12 Midnight.
Swearing-in of the President-elect and Vice President-elect – 7th January 2025
Swearing-in ceremony: Independence Square, Accra at 10 a.m.
Honourable members to be seated: 9 a.m.
Buses to depart Parliament: 8 a.m. prompt.
The incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration will form the majority caucus in the 9th Parliament, currently holding 181 seats, compared to 89 seats for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and 4 independent MPs.
Meanwhile, two more seats—Dome Kwabenya and Ablekuma North—are still pending a decision from the Electoral Commission after the re-collation of results was suspended on Saturday, 21st December.
