The Agona West branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expelled 280 members, including incumbent MP Cynthia Mamle Morrison, from the party. This decision follows the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.
In a letter addressed to the party’s National and Regional leadership, Constituency Chairman Alhaji Gibrine Tanko stated that the expulsion was in accordance with Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP’s Constitution (2017).
The letter, dated 16th December, indicated that effective immediately, the expelled individuals are no longer members of the NPP. They are barred from holding any positions in the party, attending meetings, or using the party’s symbols and flags.
Alhaji Tanko explained that the unanimous decision was taken during an expanded constituency executive committee meeting on Sunday, 15th December. The expulsions were based on multiple complaints against the affected members, including:
Standing as independent candidates against the party’s officially elected parliamentary candidate.
Declaring support for another political party.
Supporting independent candidates in the December 7, 2024, parliamentary election in the Agona West constituency.
Persistently displaying such conduct in every election year.
The two-time MP on the ticket of the NPP left to contest as an independent parliamentary candidate in the 2024 election, following, internal dispute after the party’s primaries. She was also one of four MPs whose seats were declared vacant by Speaker Alban Bagbin sparking a legal tussle between the NDC and NPP MPs in the house.
However, Morrison lost her seat to the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Ernestina Dangbey Ofori, who polled 25,965 votes. The NPP’s Christopher Arthur came second with 20,625 votes, while Cynthia Mamle Morrison secured 7,243 votes.
