Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus has shed light on the inspiration behind his unique goal celebration involving a traditionally crafted elephant stool during West Ham's 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Kudus, renowned for his iconic take a seat celebration, elevated the moment by incorporating an elephant stool—a cultural artefact synonymous with traditional authority in Ghana—after scoring the equaliser at the London Stadium.
Explaining his choice, Kudus revealed his desire to pay homage to his heritage while setting himself apart.
The stool is from Ghana. With my celebration on the boards, a lot of people are copying it now, so I had to do something to stand out and showcase Ghana. The elephant is a symbol of traditional authority back home.
The celebration not only highlighted Kudus' pride in his roots but also sparked conversations about Ghanaian culture on a global stage.
Kudus’ impact on the game
In a match that came alive in the second half, Brighton struck first, capitalising on a goalkeeping error by ?ukasz Fabia?ski to take the lead through Mats Wieffer. West Ham, however, responded swiftly.
Jarrod Bowen's fierce strike forced a save from Bart Verbruggen, with Kudus opportunistically heading in the rebound in the 68th minute.
This goal marked Kudus' third in the Premier League this season, underlining his growing influence at West Ham. Despite a quiet first half, the midfielder's equaliser ensured the Hammers secured a crucial point.
Kudus’ season so far
Since joining West Ham, Kudus has made 12 league appearances, contributing three goals and one assist. As the season progresses, the Ghanaian star will aim to continue his fine form and further cement his place as a key player in David Moyes' squad.
