The kick off of the much anticipated Africa Cup of Nations is around the corner. This 33rd edition of the tournament will be hosted by Cameroon and will see 24 teams from around the continent compete at six different stadiums to be Africa’s best football team. The opening match of the competition will see host country Cameroon play against Burkina Faso with the match scheduled to start at 20:00 on Sunday the 9th of January. The stadiums have been allowed 80% capacity for Africa’s biggest football championship. The Black Stars are in Group C alongside Comoros, Gabon and Morocco. Their first match in the tournament is against Morocco and promises to be one of the biggest clashes in the Group. This eagerly awaited game takes place at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé on Monday the 10th at 20:00. The odds for Ghana’s first match against Morocco are close with the odds currently favouring Morocco @ 2.06 with Ghana @3.60 and 3.00 for a draw. Ghana then faces Gabon in their second match on the 14th and plays the third and final match in the group stage versus Comoros on the 18th of January.
The group stage matches are made up of 3 match days and will continue up until the 20th of January when the last match takes place. There after the top two teams of each group will proceed to the Round of 16 or knock out stages of the competition which will be played over four days. The eight winning teams of Round 16 will then participate in the quarter finals which is played over two days followed by the semi finals that is scheduled to commence on the 2nd and the 3rd of February. The match for third place will be played on the 6th of Feb with the final match of the AFCON taking place later that day with kick off at 23:00. African football fans will not have to wait too long for more action as the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers are set to be played in March. Ghana came out as group leader over South Africa to progress to the Third round. 10 countries from around Africa will compete for the five slots that have been allocated to Africa for the upcoming FIFA World Cup that will be hosted by Qatar later this year.
