The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has launched its 10th-year anniversary, marking a decade of impact and collaboration with Ghana.
Launching the anniversary yesterday in Accra, Assistant UN Secretary-General and UNOPS Deputy Executive Director, Ms Sonja Leighton-Kone, highlighted the Office’s achievements in climate-resilient infrastructure, healthcare, and capacity building.
“More than 2,300 farmers were trained in climate resilient practices, enabling them to improve yields, adapt to climate change, and increase household incomes,” she said.
“We have procured more than $26 million worth of equipment in support of the Ghana Health Service, the National Stop Tuberculosis Programme, the National AIDS Control Programme, the Christian Health Association of Ghana, and others,” she added.
On health, Ms Leighton-Kone said the office has supported Ghana in constructing a midwife retraining centre, modernising the rice value chain, and procuring equipment for healthcare programmes.
UNOPS, she added, has also delivered system change, including an adaptation investment roadmap for Ghana, and equipped government institutions with climate-resilient infrastructure planning tools.
Quoting the late Ghanaian author, Amma Atta Aidoo, she emphasised resilience and commitment to solving problems.
Ms Leighton-Kone commended the Government of Ghana and partners, including the African Development Bank, the Global Fund, and the World Bank, for their trust and support over the years. She assured UNOPS’ continuous contribution to Ghana’s growth and development through capacity building, procurement of climate-resilient infrastructure, and healthcare support.
The UN Resident Coordinator, Mr Zia Choudhury, commended UNOPS’ professionalism, trust, and commitment to national development.
“UNOPS’ strengths in infrastructure, procurement, project management, and risk assurance make it an indispensable partner as Ghana accelerates delivery of its Vision 2057 and its pathway to achieving the SDGs,” he added.
He assured UNOPS of the UN’s continuous support in ensuring its partners receive world-class project services.
Established in 2015, UNOPS is an operational arm of the UN which takes pride in working efficiently and with high quality, with the goal of making a positive difference in the lives of people in its partner countries.
