Former workers of Future Global Resources (FGR), the previous operators of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine, have appealed to the government to intervene and compel Heath Goldfields Limited (HGL), the current operators, to settle all outstanding entitlements owed to them.
At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, the Convener, Gabriel Madobi, emphasized that ensuring disengaged workers receive their full entitlements would help alleviate the hardship many are facing.
Mr. Madobi explained that since HGL took over the Bogoso-Prestea Gold Mine from FGR in November 2024—after the government terminated FGR’s lease—the current operator had failed to fulfill all obligations to former workers.
“HGL’s takeover of the mine was presented as financially and technically capable of turning the mine around, clearing all outstanding debts owed to workers, stabilizing operations, and injecting capital to revive the mine,” he said.
The Convener added that HGL had not met its obligations despite several protests and appeals, a situation that has created significant challenges for former workers. “Hundreds of disengaged workers continue to suffer in silence due to unfulfilled promises, with some having passed away without receiving their entitlements,” he underlined.
The group further argued that the repeated unfulfilled commitments indicate HGL may not have the financial capacity or willingness to meet its promises and should step aside. “The signs of financial strain today mirror the exact problems that led to the removal of FGR,” the group stated.
Mr. Madobi commended the Lands Minister for supporting and safeguarding the interests of mine workers. He reiterated that the group’s appeal is in the national interest, aiming to save the mine and restore the national asset to profitability.
