Dansoman residents decry untidy roads

RESIDENTS of Dansoman are unhappy about the untidy state of roads in the Ablekuma West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, a situation which makes movement difficult and mars the beauty of the community.

The streets are littered indiscriminately with plastic waste, food wrappers, and sand piled along the main streets, with choked gutters compelling rubbish to spread onto the roads.

The Ghanaian Times, during a visit to the area on Tuesday, observed that drivers were struggling to dodge potholes filled with muddy water.

A trader at the Dansoman Market, Grace Agyemang, who sells provisions, said the untidy roads were making her daily work stressful.
“When cars pass, dust covers my wares, meanwhile the roads are tarred. I have to clean them every time, and sometimes customers refuse to patronise my wares as they look dirty,” she said.

A taxi driver, Kofi Mensah, also expressed his frustration about pothole-ridden roads in Dansoman.
“The potholes damage our cars. We spend too much money at the fitting shop. The authorities must do something,” he lamented.

A resident, Ms Anita Ofori, in an interview attributed the dirty roads in Dansoman to poor waste management in the community and blamed the situation on the assembly and the general public.
“People throw rubbish anywhere, and no one comes to clean. We all have a role to play, but the assembly must also act,” Ms Ofori stated.

Meanwhile, the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly, in an interview with The Ghanaian Times, said the assembly had plans to improve the poor sanitation situation in the area and repair some of the damaged roads.

An official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Ghanaian Times that contracts have been awarded for the desilting of gutters and patching of potholes.

“We are tired of promises. We hear the same story every year. We want to see action, not talk,” Madam Grace added.
