Muslim women have been admonished to wear the hijab as a mark of modesty and obedience to Allah.
According to the Ghana Air Force Imam, Flight Lieutenant Moucharoudine- Siddique Maiga, wearing a hijab did not only guard a woman’s modesty and chastity, but also formed part of civilisation in every country.
Speaking to the Ghanaian Times in Accra, Flt Lt Maiga emphasised the importance of hijab in Islam, saying it served as a protection to one’s modesty and chastity and it’s expected of every woman to wear it.
However, he lamented the fact that many Muslim women in Ghana were still facing discrimination and humiliation for wearing the hijab.
“I receive numerous complaints from different institutions where Muslim women are being denied their rights and subjected to ridicule just because they are wearing hijab,” he said.
“Sometimes, the authorities will pretend to listen to us, but in our absence, they subject our women to so much humiliation because they are wearing hijab”, he added.
Such an act, Flt Lt Maiga noted, was an affront to the Islamic faith and, therefore, called for legislative action to protect the rights of Muslim women to wear the hijab.
The Imam also mentioned that Islam had given women power and respect, and that wearing the hijab was a way for women to demonstrate their commitment to their faith.
He expressed gratitude to the President, John Dramani Mahama, for his support in obliging Muslim women the right to wear the hijab.
“We are very grateful to have a President who has given us his word to ensure that hijab becomes a freedom for all Muslims”, Flt Lt Maiga underlined.
Following the president’s assurance, he indicated, “It is our ardent hope that it becomes a legislative instrument, something that would call for sanction should someone try to stop or deny the Muslim woman from establishing a perfect relationship between her and Allah.”
