Minority won’t renege on scrutinising 2025 budget – Oppong Nkrumah

 The Member of Parliament for Ofoase/Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has reaffirmed the Mi­nority’s commitment to thorough­ly scrutinising the government’s economic policy for the year (2025 budget) to be delivered by the Minister of Finance, Dr Cas­siel Ato Forson, today to ensure it delivers maximum benefits to Ghanaians.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah said the primary responsibility of parliament was to hold the ex­ecutive accountable by critically assessing its programmes and commitment which is often down through the budget, adding that “We are going to critical assess the government’s commitments, programmes, and corresponding budgets to guarantee their effectiveness and sustainability.”

A statement issued in Accra yesterday and signed by Mr Oppong Nkrumah who is also the former Minister of Works and Housing said the minority would hold the government ac­countable and ensure that the promises they made to Ghana­ians were honoured.

“Our job as Parliament is to examine the commitments/ programmes and to examine the budgets for each of them. Our job is to assess, make recommendations, and, in the end, approve the policy and the budget,” he stated.

He said it would be a great disservice to the country if the minority failed to bring to bear the vast knowledge it acquired while in government to help sharp the current government’s actions.

“We will bring to bear the knowledge we’ve acquired in government, the lessons from what went right and wrong in our era, and the feedback from our constituents in our assess­ment and approvals,” he said.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah who also served as a Minister of In­formation under the erstwhile administration also stated that the transition from political rhetoric to practical gover­nance was crucial for address­ing national challenges.

“It’s good that finally the propaganda is going to give way to governance pro­grammes that can respond to the outstanding challenges our people face. We in the minority will do our part to help these programmes succeed for the people of Ghana,” he added.

As the nation awaits the 2025 budget, the Minority’s pledge to conduct a thorough review sets the stage for in­tense parliamentary debate and accountability.
