The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says it will soon arrest and prosecute some residents of Dansoman in Accra, for alleged tampering with newly installed smart meters in the area.
Consequently, the investigations department of the company had begun investigations into reports of power theft by residents of Dansoman.
Addressing journalists in Accra on Friday, the Managing Director of ECG, Mr David Asamoah, said the company decided to arrest and prosecute suspects based on the outcome of a monitoring exercise on the new meters in Dansoman, where the ECG installed 70,000 smart meters.
He advised Ghanaians to refrain from stealing electricity to enable the ECG deliver good quality services to them.
Mr Asamoah explained that it would be difficult to supply electricity if consumers do not pay for what they use.
He stated that the ECG was determined to deal with staff, technicians, and contractors who connived with consumers to steal power.
Mr Asamoah reminded consumers that the new smart meters were built with special features that send signals to meter control rooms when they were tampered with.
In furtherance, he noted that when the ECG received information that a meter had been tampered, they proceeded to inspect the meter, after which they took the necessary action.
The ECG boss said the company started “Operation Keep Lights On,” early this year, to collect debts owed the company by consumers.
Mr Asamoah said the ECG collected GH¢400 million in the first week of the exercise, out of the GH¢450 million envisaged, and that the focus of the exercise might change in the coming days, ultimately geared toward making the ECG efficient.
Mr Paul Asibi Abariga, Director, Legal Department, ECG, reiterated that the company would conduct further investigations before the suspects are put before the court.
He said the investigations department of EGC would ensure persons investigated had actually committed crime and deserved to be prosecuted.
Mr Abariga cautioned Ghanaians against power theft, noting that anybody engaged in such activity would not be let off the hook.
