EU presents security equipment to GIS

The European Union (EU) has presented specialised security equipment to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) as part of its efforts to enhance the country’s border security pro­tection programme.

They included 10 motorbikes, three laptops and two desktop computers.

The EU Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Irchad Razaaly, who made the presentation, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to strengthen its partnership with Ghana, partic­ularly in combating international organised crime and enhancing border security.

He stated that the donation was part of the Strengthening Border Security in Ghana project (SBS Ghana) to enhance border security through capacity building, training, and the provision of specialised security equipment.

Furthermore, he noted that the SBS Ghana project was funded by the European Union through the EU Trust Fund (EUTF) and implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy De­velopment (ICMPD) in collabora­tion with the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

Mr Razaaly underscored the EU’s dedication to strengthening Ghana’s law enforcement capabil­ities, particularly in acquiring the necessary expertise, skills, and re­sources to tackle migration issues.

The EU Ambassador reaffirmed his outfit’s strong commitment to partnering with Ghana to advance security and development through a range of collaborative efforts.

Receiving the items at a brief ceremony held at the GIS Head­quarters in Accra on Friday, the Comptroller General of the GIS, Mr Kwame Asuah Takyi, high­lighted the service’s successful collaboration with the EU over the years, adding that, it yielded strategic projects that reinforced the service’s mandate to effectively manage migration in Ghana.

“The support from the Europe­an Union over the years extends beyond the provision of equip­ment, it reflects a shared com­mitment to building institutional capacity and fostering knowledge exchange,” he underlined.

The Comptroller General of the GIS therefore, pledged that the items received would be used for their intended purpose, and it will be well maintained to ensure their lifespan.

He expressed optimism about the service’s eagerness to sustain fruitful partnership with the EU in tackling complex issues surround­ing migration.

The Head of Office and Project Manag¬er, ICMPD, Mrs Amala Obiokoye-Nwalor, expressed her appreciation for the EU’s dedi­cation to the project’s successful implementation.

“The project takes a a holistic approach, addressing anti-cor­ruption measures and supporting the GIS in developing a code of conduct that outlines expected standards of behaviour,”she said.

She highlighted that countries needed to collaborate with one another to ensure regional collabo­ration and development.
