2 jailed 30 years for robbery… accomplice charged, other absconds with gun

The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced two persons to 30 years’ imprisonment, for robbing a banker of her vehicle and money at East Legon Christian Centre.

Peter Amuzu, also known as Master Pee, and Isaac Brena Esh­un, aka Young, earlier denied the charges of conspiracy and robbery.

When the matter was called, the accused, through their counsel, changed their plea from not guilty to guilty.

The court, presided by Mr Kwabena Kodua Obiri-Yeboah, retook their pleas, and convicted each of the accused on their own pleas.

On the charge of conspiracy, each was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and on the charge of robbery, each received 15 years imprisonment. Both sentences are to run concurrently.

Ibrahim Mohammed, accom­plice, will stand trial for charges of abetment of crime and dishonestly receiving, buying a pistol for the two convicts to use in committing the crime and receiving the com­plainant’s vehicle.

Prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Haligah, said the com­plainant (name withheld), was a banker residing at East Legon.

The court heard that Amuzu was a resident of American House, East Legon, Eshun, a driver, resid­ing at Takoradi, and Mohammed, aka King Dawa, a businessman, residing at Gururgu,Tamale.

ASP Haligah said Amuzu, were both on remand in the police cell at Madina for robbery.

The prosecution said after leaving cell, Amuzu and Eshun, armed with a pistol, robbed the complainant at gun point at her residence at East Legon Christian Centre.

ASP Haligah said Amuzu and Eshun seized the banker’s Mercedes Benz C180, and Eshun took over the steering wheel and they (accused) drove the car to an unknown destination.

ASP Haligah said the banker had her handbag containing a German passport, three iPhones, valued at GH¢44.629.43, a Ghana card, ATM cards, health insur­ance card, $1500, GH¢16,000 and unspecified amount of Jamaican dollars.

Prosecution said Eshun on the instructions of Amuzu sold the car to Mohammed in Tamale.

ASP Haligah said Mohammed transferred GH¢10,000 to Esh­un’s mobile money wallet as part payment.

According to prosecution, Eshun was arrested at Dansoman, Accra, and a search conducted on him led to the retrieval of one gold coloured iPhone 14promax, Samsung Galaxy A15, air pods, GH¢18,000, $101 4000 Uganda shillings, 400 Rwanda franc, 550 Jamaican dollars, belonging to the complainant.

ASP Haligah said Eshun ad­mitted the offence and mentioned Amuzu as his accomplice.

Prosecution said Amuzu was arrested at East Legon, and an iPhone 13promax belonging to the complainant’s friend, Mansour Inusah, a witness in the case, was retrieved.

Amuzu admitted the offence and mentioned Mohammed as his friend in Tamale, whom he instructed Eshun to send the car to, ASP Haligah told the court.

The court heard that Mo­hammed was arrested in Tamale in possession of the complainant’s Mercedes Benz and a Toyota Fortuner 4X4.

ASP Haligah further dis­closed that Mo­hammed told the police that he bought the Toyota Fortuner 4X4 from Amuzu and his friend, Kwame.

Investigations revealed that the owner of the Toyota Fortuner 4X4 was robbed and shot by Amuzu and Kwame, in another robbery at Lakeside Estate, Accra.

ASP Haligah said Mohammed admitted that he gave Amuzu GH¢7,000 for the purchase of a gun, which was used in the robbery, and he (Mohammed) was offered the Mercedes Benz at the cost of GH¢300.000, and he made part payment of GH¢10,000.

Moreover, Prosecution said Es­hun and Mohammed led the police to Techiman where complainant’s personal effects and the German passport, ATMCards, Ghana Card and other documents belonging to the complainant were retrieved from the scene.

Efforts were being made to apprehend Kwame, who is said to be in possession of the weapon used in com­mitting the crime
