Qualified professional golfers from nine African countries, including Zimbabwe, Uganda, Nigeria, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, among others are feverishly preparing for the 2024 Genser PGA Championship at the Celebrity Golf Club, Sakumono.
The prestigious golf competition will be the last major event under the PGA and the first PGA Championship in Ghana under a new sponsor, Genser Energy, a leading energy solutions provider.
The eleventh edition of the championship will be held from November 27-30 and will be played in three categories – regular pros, seniors and the ladies division.
A statement from the organisers revealed that the tournament will be played in accordance with the rules of golf as approved by the Royal and Ancient Golf of St Andrews, the United States Golf Association and the local rules of Celebrity Golf Club.
Regular professionals are expected to play over 72 holes for four days whiles the seniors and ladies will play for three days.
The statement announced a total prize money of GH¢411,000 from the sponsors, making the event a prestigious one for golfers who are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to emerge victorious.
With Nigeria’s Sunday Oladape winning the previous edition at Danmang, the home-based regular professionals are said to have intensified training to be equipped enough for the four-day golf fiesta.
Expected to lead the local contingents are Kojo Barnin, Vincent Torgah, Maxwell Owusu Bonsu, Augustine Mannaseh and Lucky Ayisah, who won the last qualifier (Memory Lane) and the Ghana Open Tournament both at the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi.
Speaking to the media, the Director of Operations at the PGA, Alhaji Ahmed Padori, expressed the PGA’s appreciation to the new sponsors and stated that their investment was vital for the organisation of the championship.
He hoped a cordial relationship will be built between the PGA and Genser Energy for the development of professional golf in the country and urged the golfers to train adequately for the competition.
