Kumasi Asante Kotoko jumped to second sport on the Ghana Premier League (GPL) table after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over defending league champions, Samartex, at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium in a match day 7 encounter.
Impressive forward, Albert Amoah, scored the only goal of the game in the first half.
It was a welcomed victory for the Porcupine Warriors who perch behind league leaders, Medeama SC, with a point less than Medeama 15 at the top but with an outstanding game.
Amoah, who joined Kotoko as one of the two players from relegated Great Olympics, has been consistence on the score sheet, scoring other crucial goals to keep Kotoko at the top ranks of the Premier League table.
It was a game the Reds enjoyed greater dominance and kept play mostly in the area of Samartex who have given strong indication to defend the trophy to return to Africa club competition after failing to progress to the league stage of the CAF Champions League competition.
Within that period of control, they created several chances but failed to find the back of the net until the 31st minute when Amoah capitalised on the failure of the Samartex defence to clear a danger to coolly slot in.
The goal sent the sparse crowd – mostly red faithful, into endless joy as they hailed their new hero.
Kotoko did not drop their guard after the goal. They faced a revived Samartex side squarely and had the best chances to double the lead but the visitors defended gallantly.
Samartex resumed the second half strongly and found ways to peg Kotoko back as they made several inroads in their area.
However, Coach Prosper Ogun’s side remained resolute with a dominant performance to defend the solitary win.
