GIS cautions foreigners against illegal acquisition of Ghanaian citizenship

 The Management of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has issued a stern warning to foreign nationals resident in the country, to desist from attempting to acquire Gha­naian Citizenship through false declaration.

This warning follows the ar­rest and prosecution of two for­eigners, Nwachen Edwin Ndum, also known as Mensah Edwin, Cameroonian, and Samuel Sagbo, a Togolese.

The caution was issued in a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations of the Service,

 Assistant Commissioner of Immigration, Mr Michael Amoa­ko-Atta, copied the Ghanaian Times, in Accra.

It said Ndum and Sagboen­tered the country illegally and sought the assistance of some Ghanaians to acquire Ghanaian birth certificates and Ghana cards to enable them to secure Ghana­ian passports.

The GIS said both accused have been sentenced to 36 months imprisonment each in hard labor for acquiring Ghana­ian birth certificates and attempt­ing to acquire Ghana passports.

The statement said the GIS has released an increase in such offenses and the arrested per­sons have been prosecuted.

“The GIS again will like to caution Ghanaians against assisting non-Ghanaians to obtain citizenship documents such as a birth certificate, Gha­na card or Ghana passport,” it said and further warned of the overall implication on national sovereignty and security while reiterating that persons found culpable will face full rigors of the law.

The GIS gave the assurance that it has remained resolute and will not compromise on its mandate in rigidly enforcing regulations on immigration.
