Parliament has condemned the terrorist attack on Ghanaian Traders in Burkina Faso and called for urgent action to protect citizens operating in high-risk regions. The incident, which occurred on Valentine’s Day, claimed multiple lives and left several traders injured.
Speaking on the floor yesterday, Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour described the victims as breadwinners and pillars of their families, emphasising that they were engaged in legitimate trade.
“Today is a very sad day. The only crime these compatriots committed was to go about their legitimate business, ensuring their households could eat.
“For the failure of the government and the state to protect these citizens, they met their untimely death,” the MP said.
He then highlighted what he called failures on the part of the state, including a lack of travel advisories, inadequate intelligence sharing and the absence of coordinated security measures to ensure safe passage for traders.
He also noted that for seven months, Ghana has had no substantive Minister of Defence to lead bilateral arrangements and secure the safety of citizens in neighboring states.
“Even six days after the incident, the government has failed to offer a coordinated response. Bodies have not been properly dignified or identified, and families have been denied the opportunity for proper burial rites,” he added.
The MP urged Parliament to demand answers, calling for investigations into the incident, compensation for victims’ families and a comprehensive review of Ghana’s regional security protocols.
Minister of Roads and Highways and member for Adaklu, Kwame Governs Agbodza on his part extended condolences to the bereaved and wished speedy recovery for those injured.
He also defended Ghana’s diplomatic staff, clarifying that no trader was “led to the slaughter” and praising the efforts of officials working under challenging circumstances.
The debate highlighted serious concerns over regional instability, the safety of Ghanaian traders abroad and the need for stronger government coordination and oversight to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
