The Ashanti Regional Minister and Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has confirmed a shooting incident at a funeral in Obuasi that occurred on Saturday, 29 November 2025. The confirmation was contained in an official statement he shared on his Facebook page.
According to the minister, a firearm was discharged during the ceremony, injuring Nana Okofo Kwabena Bonsu, Adanse Dompoasehene.
Police officers responded swiftly and arrested the suspect, 30-year-old Nana Yaw Dankwa, who is currently in custody assisting with investigations.
Dr. Amoakohene stressed that the incident highlights the critical importance of the Interior Ministry’s temporary nationwide ban on the use of firearms at funerals and traditional gatherings.
He reiterated that the directive is a vital public safety measure intended to protect lives, prevent injuries, and ensure that community events are conducted in a peaceful and dignified manner.
He added that the injured chief received medical treatment and has since been discharged home.
The minister urged the public to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies as they carry out their duties. He reaffirmed REGSEC’s commitment to preserving peace, enhancing safety, and upholding the rule of law across the Ashanti Region.
