President John Dramani Mahama has paid a glowing tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as a pre-eminent advocate for women’s empowerment whose lifelong commitment to social progress left an indelible mark on Ghana.
The final burial service, held on Friday at the Independence Square in Accra, brought together government officials, political leaders, diplomats, clergy and thousands of mourners. The interdenominational state service reflected the national significance of her contributions and the wide respect she commanded across political and religious divides.
In a tribute read on his behalf, President Mahama praised Nana Konadu as “a woman who walked with purpose long before the nation learned to call her a leader.” He noted that in every sphere of public life, she stood firmly for the advancement of women, often breaking barriers and opening doors for those who had long been left behind.
Mahama described her as bold, outspoken and fiercely patriotic. “She believed deeply in Ghana and in the boundless potential of its women and girls,” he said.
As First Lady, Nana Konadu redefined the role, transforming it into a powerful platform for national development. Through her leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement, she spearheaded initiatives in literacy, reproductive and maternal health, early childhood education and economic empowerment—years before these issues became central to the country’s development agenda. Her work, Mahama noted, touched thousands of families and laid the foundation for many of the gender-sensitive policies Ghana continues to benefit from.
He described her as assertive, principled and unyielding in her convictions, noting that she never hesitated to push boundaries or stand alone when guided by her conscience. “Her legacy is one of courage, service and transformational leadership,” the former president stated.
