Thousands of mourners have converged on Ghana’s Independence Square to pay their final respects to the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the late Jerry John Rawlings, the first President of the Fourth Republic.
The solemn service has drawn people from across the political divide, together with members of the international community, united in honouring one of Ghana’s most iconic First Ladies renowned for championing the rights and welfare of Ghanaian women.
Amidst solemn hymns and dirges, the ceremony has featured heartfelt tributes from her grandchildren, children, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the 31st December Women’s Movement, and several other groups. Speakers have highlighted her towering legacy as the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, her role in advancing women’s rights, and her influence in pushing gender equality provisions into Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
They further celebrated her historic achievement as the first Ghanaian woman to contest the presidency, as well as her many community development initiatives, including early childhood centres, women’s training programmes, and health outreach projects across the country.
Among the dignitaries present are President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, and Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
