As part of activities to mark the upcoming Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day on September 21, 2025 the Ellembelle District Assembly, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for the area, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, has embarked on a major clean-up exercise at Nkroful and surrounding communities.
The initiative, held under the theme: “Clean-up and Planting of Trees along the Kwame Nkrumah Highway”, brought together stakeholders, including the District Chief Executive, Mr. Joseph Kwasi Amah Agyekum, students, community members and officials from the Assembly.

The exercise, which commenced at 7 a.m. and ended around noon, saw enthusiastic participation from students of Essiama and Nkroful Senior High Schools, who joined efforts in clearing overgrown weeds, desilting drains and cleaning major roadways.
A key highlight of the exercise was the weeding and beautification of the Essiama–Nkroful road stretch, a historically significant route leading to the birthplace of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The Assembly also took the opportunity to plant royal coconut trees along the stretch as part of its green initiative to improve the environment and enhance the landscape.
Though similar cleanup activities took place across Nkroful, the Essiama–Nkroful road served as the focal point of attention due to its symbolic and strategic importance.
Speaking after the exercise, Mr. Armah Kofi Buah, who also serves as the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, emphasised the importance of environmental responsibility and community involvement, ahead of the national holiday commemorating Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy.
“Keeping our surroundings clean is a reflection of the respect we have for our history and for ourselves. This exercise is not just about sanitation. It is about honouring the memory of a great leader by taking pride in our communities,” he said.
The DCE, Mr. Agyekum, commended the youth and participating institutions for their dedication and urged residents to maintain the cleanliness throughout the year.
The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day is observed annually to celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Nkrumah, Ghana’s foremost independence leader and the first President of the Republic.
