The Circuit Court, Accra, has sentenced a 28-year-old salesgirl, Sumaiya Amidu, to ten years imprisonment for unlawful possession of narcotic drugs, contrary to Section 37(1) of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).
Presiding Judge Isaac Addo handed down the sentence after a full trial, during which the accused was found guilty of possessing 165 gold foil wraps of cocaine, weighing 7.1940 grammes.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court also imposed a fine of 10,000 penalty units(GH¢120,000). In default of payment, she will serve an additional three years in prison.
The prosecution, led by ASP Seth Frimpong, revealed that the accused was arrested on March 15, 2022, at about 11:30 a.m., by officers from the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Accra.
Acting on intelligence, officers apprehended Amidu at a cosmetic shop located in Sabon Zongo, a suburb of Abossey Okai, in the Greater Accra Region.
A body search revealed 165 wraps of cocaine concealed in the pants she was wearing at the time of arrest. During interrogation, Amidu admitted that the drugs were in her possession and claimed she had been asked by one “Dauda” to keep them.
She, however, refused to assist the police in tracking down the alleged supplier. Subsequent forensic analysis confirmed the substance to be cocaine, and Amidu was formally charged.
