Legal practitioner Kwesi Botchway Jnr., Esq., has publicly challenged what he describes as “fundamentally false and misleading”, claims made by Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic AkuritingaAyine, regarding the ongoing prosecution of former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General, Mr. Kwabena Adu-Boahene.
In a strongly worded Facebook post titled – “Setting the Records Straight,” Mr. Kwesi Botchway accused the Attorney-General of fabricating key facts about Mr.Adu-Boahene’s employment history.
At the heart of Kwesi Botchway’s rebuttal is the Attorney-General’s claim that Mr.Adu-Boahene had been a staff member of the NSB since 2007 and its Director since 2017.
Speaking at a recent press briefing, the Attorney-General stated:
“We have filed a case. We have evidence on record of the date of the purchase of the properties with receipts from the Real Estate people. We have the date of construction of the estate and the one at AsokoreMampong.
“So if counsel comes out to say that they [the properties] were purchased prior to his appointment, he should bring countervailing evidence.
“Adu-Boahene was appointed in 2007 as a staff of the National Signal Bureau. It was in 2017 that he became the Director of the Bureau. So if he [counsel] is saying that before 2007 he bought those properties or before 2017, he bought those properties…”
Mr.KwesiBotchway vehemently denies this assertion, noting that the National Signals Bureau was only legally established on December 29, 2020 through Act 1040.
Prior to this, the institution existed as the Bureau of National Communications (BNC) under the Office of the National Security Coordinator.
“As of 2007, the NSB did not exist. It also did not exist in 2017 for Adu-Boahene to have been its Director,” KwesiBotchway wrote, calling the AG’s statement a “complete lie and deliberate misrepresentation.”
He clarified that Mr.Adu-Boahene was first employed under the National Security Council Secretariat in 2007 and only became Director-General of the NSB in 2021, following its formal establishment by law.
KwesiBotchway’s Facebook post appears aimed not only at correcting what he perceives as factual inaccuracies, but also at reframing public understanding of a case he believes is marred by “intellectual confusion” and deliberate mischaracterisations.
The dispute unfolds against the backdrop of Mr.Adu-Boahene’s ongoing criminal trial, which the Attorney-General confirmed is actively underway. Two witnesses are expected to testify before the legal vacation begins on July 31.
The trial centers on the alleged embezzlement of funds earmarked for the procurement of a cyber defense system from Israeli firm, ISC Holdings.
Mr. Kwesi Botchway also hinted at further revelations, stating that his next publication will focus on the role of Mr.Adu-Boahene’s wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, whose arrest was tied to her position as a co-director in the disputed private company.
