
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ahanta West, Mavis Kukua Bissue Boateng, has told chiefs and people of Ahanta that the launch of the Ahanta Renaissance Project (ARP) marks a bold step forward towards reclaiming, restoring and institutionalizing the pride of Ahanta language.
“When I asked for your mandate to serve, I made a clear promise – I will work diligently to make sure Ahanta language becomes part of Ghana Education Service curriculum”.
Speaking at the launch of the ARP, an initiative of the MP, Kukua Bissue Boateng said Ahanta language “is the soul, the keeper of our history and the vessel of our future”.
After assuming office as MP, Kukua told the chiefs at the launch that she took a quick decision to honour her promises. This, she did, by constituting a dedicated and inclusive committee to lead the process.
According to her, the committee members include representative of University of Education Winneba, the three Traditional Councils, a representative from the Ahanta Bible Project, Department of Ghana School of Languages, a member from GES and Local Council of Churches.
Following the formation of the committee, the latter began critical engagement with the GES, the Dean and some lecturers of Ghana School of Languages and other experts in language and curriculum development.The Minister for Education, NACCA and other several stakeholders were also engaged.
“I am pleased to announce that the Ahanta West Education Directorate has identified teachers with Ahanta background who have been paid for the pilot program and the piloting of the Ahanta language curriculum is currently underway. It’s being turned into reality before our very eyes.”
She thanked GES for support, chiefs for the unwavering commitment and Ahanta Bible Project for training teachers for the pilot programme.
On 2nd July 2025, MP Kukua Bissue Boateng made a strong statement to begin the process of mainstreaming Ahanta language into the formal education system so that beyond Ahanta West,the initiative could remain a sustainable exercise.
The statement on the floor of Parliament received overwhelming supportby other MPs.
According to Ahanta West MP she had embarked upon project because for generations, Ahanta language has served as medium of identity, oral tradition, governance and spiritual livewire.
“It is the thread that binds us to our present and must not be lost”, she stated. She emphasised that Article 39 (3) of the Ghana’s constitution mandated the state to promote the development of Ghanaian languages.
That aside, African Union Language plan for Action for Africa and UNESCO convention on Cultural Diversity emphasized the critical important of indigenous languages in fostering identity and inclusion.
Research and practices within GES, the MP highlighted confirmed that teaching children in their mother tongues enhanced learning outcomes, boost confidence and accelerate academic excellence.
“This evidence is clear – our children learn better when they learn first in their own language”, she said.
